MediaAtLife Ethics Policy
Effective date: July 11, 2026
Last updated: July 11, 2026
This Ethics Policy sets out the standards expected from MediaAtLife editors, writers, contributors and social media managers.
Accuracy and Honesty
We do not knowingly publish false or misleading information.
Writers must not invent:
- Sources
- Interviews
- Quotations
- Documents
- Eyewitness accounts
- Statistics
- Personal relationships
- Official statements
Information taken from another source must not be presented as original reporting.
Fairness
People and organisations covered by MediaAtLife should be described fairly and in context.
We avoid removing important facts merely because they complicate the story. When credible accounts conflict, we try to represent the main verified positions.
Privacy
Public interest is not the same as public curiosity.
Before publishing private or sensitive information, we consider:
- Whether the information is already public
- Whether the person disclosed it voluntarily
- Whether it is relevant to the story
- Whether publication could create a safety risk
- Whether the person is a public figure
- Whether the information concerns a child
- Whether identifying details can be reduced
We exercise additional care when reporting on children, private individuals and people experiencing grief, trauma or harassment.
Harassment and Discrimination
MediaAtLife does not support harassment, threats or discriminatory abuse.
We do not encourage readers to target, contact or intimidate a person involved in a story.
We avoid unnecessary references to race, nationality, religion, disability, gender, sexuality or medical status unless the information is directly relevant and responsibly sourced.
Allegations and Legal Matters
An allegation is not proof.
We use careful language when reporting accusations, investigations, lawsuits, arrests or disputes. Where appropriate, we include the response of the person or organisation involved.
We do not describe someone as guilty unless responsibility has been legally established or clearly admitted.
Graphic and Disturbing Content
Graphic images or distressing details should only be used when they serve a clear editorial purpose.
Warnings may be added when content could be disturbing. We avoid publishing violent, humiliating or intimate material merely to attract attention.
Conflicts of Interest
Contributors must disclose relationships that could affect—or appear to affect—their judgement.
Relevant conflicts may include:
- Family or personal relationships
- Employment
- Paid partnerships
- Gifts
- Investments
- Business interests
- Public campaigning
- Close relationships with a subject
An editor may reassign or decline a story when a conflict cannot be appropriately managed.
Gifts, Travel and Benefits
Writers should not accept gifts or benefits that could reasonably influence coverage.
When travel, accommodation, event access or products are provided by a company, the relationship should be disclosed where relevant.
Receiving access or a product does not guarantee favourable coverage.
Plagiarism
MediaAtLife does not permit plagiarism.
Writers must credit:
- Original reporting
- Exclusive interviews
- Photographers
- Researchers
- Data providers
- Publications that first obtained a document or statement
Rewriting another article sentence by sentence without adding original value is not acceptable.
Artificial Intelligence
AI tools must not be used to fabricate facts or make realistic false representations of actual events.
Realistic AI-generated images should be labelled when readers could reasonably mistake them for documentary photographs.
A human editor remains accountable for anything published under the MediaAtLife name.
Social Media Conduct
Team members should remember that their public behaviour may affect trust in MediaAtLife.
Official accounts must not:
- Publish unverified accusations
- Encourage harassment
- Impersonate another person
- Secretly promote paid content
- Misrepresent edited images as real events
- Delete legitimate correction questions merely because they are critical
Enforcement
A breach of this policy may result in:
- Editing or removal of content
- A correction
- Loss of publishing access
- Termination of a contributor relationship
- Further review by the publisher
